Precision, Precision, and Precision

From the beginning, it was clear to me that the precision I was aiming for I could never pull off my CNC machine. So, I found myself a manufacturer I could partner with to machine me the parts I designed.

After receiving the first four prototypes -two raw-finished and two micro sandblasted- I checked them for their accuracy on the agreed tolerance from ±0.02mm. The following picture shows my measuring results. Red means out of the agreed tolerance, green stands for within the tolerance, and green-underlined means spot on.

Measuring Points on Four Prototypes

Once done, I averaged all measuring points between the four prototypes and combined them on a graphic. Red again means out of the agreed tolerance and black within the tolerance. I quickly recognized a pattern of points out of tolerance (the two red rectangles).

Averaged Measuring Points

I informed my manufacturer about my findings, and together we could identify and eliminate the issues during the manufacturing process. Random quality checks of the final received product confirm the agreed tolerance. All measured points were within the agreed tolerance of ±0.02mm; some show even better results.
